Maggie Carson has a voice that could stop a freight train. We've heard it over the decade she spent singing with her band Spirit Family Reunion, but her voice is at its most powerful on The Dark Was Aglow, her first solo effort. In spite of Carson’s long tenure in traditional American music, this album represents a bold departure from the genre. Can an old-time record be described as galactic? Maybe now it can. Carson’s voice soars above glacial landscapes of reverb-enhanced banjo, minimal-yet-sonorous drumming and shimmering tack piano and organ (played by Alex Tween of The Forms). The result is like nothing you've ever heard. Carson has excised the conventions, and replaced them with fresh perspectives, but she retains the raw, vulnerable core of Appalachian music that makes singers like Ola Belle Reed so compelling. It's exhilaratingly cosmic, passionately intimate, and simply goosebump-inducing.
Singer, songwriter and banjo player Maggie Carson was born and raised in New York City. Carson toured for a decade with her band, Spirit Family Reunion, and shared stages with Pete Seeger, Levon Helm, Sharon Jones, toured with Tedeschi Trucks Band, Dr. Dog, The Felice Brothers, Alabama Shakes, The Deslondes, and Trampled By Turtles. Spirit Family Reunion has appeared at the Newport Folk Festival, Central Park SummerStage, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Austin City Limits, Celebrate Brooklyn!, Tønder Festival, and Winnipeg Folk Festival, and was featured on Tiny Desk, and NPR Weekend Edition. While on tour, Carson began to develop her solo voice: throaty, unadorned, and more rock-n-roll. Combined with unorthodox banjo playing, her own blend of clawhammer and fingerpicking, her musical persona evolved into what one reviewer referred to as “its own center of gravity.” As a solo artist, Carson has shared stages with Nana Grizol and Wild Yaks.

Why is this record free?
We believe that recorded music is public art, to be enjoyed together. It is for listening above consuming. It is essential for our well being. We want our records to be available to our community without the barrier of cost. In the spirit of sharing, we give them to you as a gift. We truly believe these records can transform you, the community, and the world. A record is a document of communal magic and genuine expression. How can we put a price on that?
How can I support you?
We rely on individual donations to produce and distribute records. We don’t cut corners. These records take a lot of time and space to be made well. Why vinyl?
Nobody is going to inherit their parents’ Spotify playlists. A vinyl record has lasting value beyond our lifetime. We want it to exist in the future because it will become a part of how we look back and see ourselves. We make an extra effort to design and hand print our records ourselves. They are beautiful physical objects to care for. Don’t worry, we have a digital format available at all times as well.
